What I Miss the Most

31 Jul

I really had to take a deep breath before putting this down. It has been hectic for two weeks running and would be for another two weeks. I feel so envious of the children, they are on vacation now, but poor old me must go to work every single day of the week…who says being a child isn’t more fun?

I envy the children their carefree childhood, and they envy me my supposedly carefree adulthood! Someone has really got to tell the children that if there is one thing they would miss so much when they grow up, it is their childhood because right now, I sure am missing mine!

A Woman’s Age

25 Jul

My mother once told me that the age of a woman depends on who is asking. That is to say that just as a chameleon changes its colour to suit the environment, a woman’s age also undergoes changes in order to blend with the ‘environment.’

Before the computer age when you could google any information you need, which would include such medical reports which are not ‘classified’…what could be classified about when you were born, I mean, we all know Prince George of Cambridge weighed 8lb 6oz! Well before now, we all rely on whatever the person in question told us to determine the age of others. The women especially had field day misleading whoever they wish, about their age. These used to be the determining factors

  • who is asking?
  • you really want to know?
  • you already know.

For their ‘peers’ women would generally slightly increase their age. They do not want their peers to look down on them because they are younger! The older you are to your peers the better…show some respect!

When they want to impress, they generally reduce their age. Women do not want their male counterparts to see them as old, so they celebrate 18 for about five years, from 18 they skip 19 and become 20 for about another five years. At this time they are approaching 30 but who knows about it? Their next birthday comes and they are 18 again! And then all of a sudden they are 28, and 28 they remain until they are wrinkled.

The only persons who know the woman’s accurate age are her immediate family members, especially their mother. Whoever would lie to their mother about their age?!? Well some dads could be deceived, you are the age you tell your father because to them you are always daddy’s little girl.

Anyway, like I said, that was then and this is now. Some of us are proud to say our age to whoever asks regardless of gender.

I have some very fond memories of my mom and her ‘all wise’ sayings, and anytime I remember her version of what determines a woman’s age, it always brings a smile.

OUTRAGE!

22 Jul

What is happening with the Nigeria Law-makers is highly embarrassing, if they are not fighting and breaking each other’s heads, they are sitting quietly and legalising atrocities! Worst part of it all is that they get paid fat salaries to sit or fight as the case may be. I feel for the children! I look at my 13 year old daughter and I cannot begin to imagine her sitting in some man’s house as the mistress/wife of the house. This is absurd! The kind of absurdity you find only in a country like Nigeria. Soon a bill would be passed legalising pedophilia!

Must Nigeria always take the first position in badness?!

Graduation

21 Jul

My daughter Crystal graduated from Grade School to High School this weekend, while her elder sister graduated from Junior High to Senior High. We tried to make it a memorable occasion, though the rains had a swell time at our expense!

My Baby, My Daughter

16 Jul

Who can place the real value

On a magnificent child

Tell me if you have a clue

For fear I too may go wild.

The magnificent child oh

So precious and so divine

Would lift you high from below

And then keep you right in line

Strayed have you…ever been tempted

Look at those innocent eyes

And yes, don’t be affected

Don’t ask yourself all the whys

You really must be made of stones

Something harder than concrete

Not to see the dif’rent tones

Tears magnificent and neat

My baby yes my daughter

How magnificent you are

Your days so filled with laughter

Just like mine so yours too are

Just Give Them Your Love

14 Jul

When a baby is born and utters the first cry

Just give them your love

When a child cries for nothing but the sky

Just give them your love

When they’ve done nothing but hurt you so deep

Just give them your love

When it seems they roll down a mount so steep

Just give them your love

For nothing conquers a heart gone astray

Than Love unconditional and so gay

Just give them your love

Love…a Unique Feeling

9 Jul

It’s been said, and rightly so, that humans have the greatest capability to love. I am sure that the reason for this is that our fellow occupants of the planet, the animals, do not really know how to express love like humans, they work by instinct. So that means that when the hen gathers its chicks under its wings it is not actually love, it is being instinctively protective of its young ones. When the lion fights off intruders into its pride, it’s not really love for the lionesses or the cubs for that matter, it is, like the hen, also protecting its domain…instinctively.

Then we come to humans. When we talk about love as it relates to humans, there is always the tendency to think only about romantic love. But we are wrong, romantic love is just one of the types of love humans display, there are others. We humans show love in four different ways

  • love for family members. This kind of love is found in every society. People would bend over backwards to take care of their family members, the expression ‘we are family’ seems to make some action which otherwise would have been looked upon as wrong, to be acceptable. It takes sometimes ‘superhuman effort’ to go against one’s family, it is often considered unnatural. As unnatural as when a mother decides to do away with her child.
  • brotherly affection…the love among friends. Children born of the same parents have a unique bond. It is so great that they try as much as possible to look after each other and protect each other even against their parents sometimes. It is therefore no wonder some would say of a close friend, “We are not just friends, we are brothers /sisters. Animals can only practise this kind of love in cartoons or animations.
  • romantic love…that is the love that exists between spouses, a husband and a wife, a man a woman. It is a warm feeling that attracts these two opposites and brings them together to form a family where the other forms of love are born.
  • agape…unconditional love. This love transcends all others because it is a love that is not bound by family ties or friendships. Agape makes all the other forms of love pale into insignificance. It is the kind of love that moves someone to protect a total stranger at the expense of their own life. It is principled love, a love without hypocrisy. The foremost personage to display that love to us, was and is God.

It is important that we do that which sets us apart from animals. Let love rule our hearts and our minds and indeed our thinking. With love in our hearts we would not take up arms to kill each other in the name of terrorism or crime. Let’s imitate God’s selfless love and be happy.
